Resistance of Voice

Xilichen Hua, 2025

Resistance of Voice investigates how women navigate resistance within public and private spaces through the interplay of sound and virtual embodiment. Set on a stage surrounded by a silent audience, the artist’s digital presence becomes a body under constant scrutiny, watched, measured, and confined by collective gaze. Her own vocal narration moves between calm tides and sharp flames, revealing emotional states shaped by societal expectation: chosen softness, clarified anger, familiar exhaustion, and unwavering resilience.

These utterances merge with whispers, breaths, and layered noise, pushing against the architecture and the gaze that attempt to contain her. Fragmented bodies and expanding sonic fields construct a confrontation where visibility is both exposure and empowerment. Resistance of Voice asserts that a woman can hold multiple truths simultaneously, gentle yet unbroken, furious yet whole, resisting any demand to be only one thing.
